Welcome to my blog, where I take pleasure in words and pictures, be they my own or those of others. I'm a creative individual, and the crafty side I explore on my 'other blog', Picking Up The Threads, which I hope you'll visit too. I'm sure you understand that I have sole copyright of my original work and any of my contributions, so please ask if you want to use them. A polite request is rarely refused. So, as they used to say on the BBC's 'Listen With Mother' radio programme, many years ago: "Are you sitting comfortably? Then we'll begin."

Girl, Bicycles and Dogs

This was our prompt picture for this week’s Sepia Saturday;  it comes from the State Library of Queensland, Australia, and it features: Miss Ida Zornig of Maryborough c1911. I'm a little short of time, photographs and ideas this week; however, a quick trawl through my photograph collection yielded one or two, (although I'm sure they have been seen before).

This is my Mum, aged about eighteen on her treasured bicycle. It featured in Girl on a Bicycle back in 2015, along with the one below of my daughter, learning to ride, in 1982.

Heres my daughter again, in 1990, with a friends dog, Spark, and three years ago, making friends with a young Podenco who followed us on our walk. Podencos are Canarian hunting dogs.

Just for fun, heres a dog on a bicycle; well, in a basket on a bicycle, strictly speaking. I snapped this just a couple of weeks ago, so aged him using editing tools to fit in with the sepia side of things.

  1. Oooh love your ageing process in that last shot. What program did you use for that?

  3. Just like your mum, my first and second bikes were my all time favorites and just last year I got a new one. It was way over due too. Lovely photo of your daughter and friend's pup but the last one takes the honors, I just adored it.

  4. Short on time? Looks like you've hit all the marks. Well done.

  5. OK, you get extra points for finding a dog ON a bicycle! But the best is your mother on her bike.

  6. I liked all your pix - especially the one of your Mum on her bike. The last one (you cleverly 'fixed up') of the dog (in the basket) on the bike reminded me of dogs in grocery carts. Those so-called "comfort dogs" that stores allow to be carried around in the carts. Uck. At least some women lay down blankets under their little pets. But I'd just as soon not have them riding around in the carts I'm putting my groceries in - thank you very much.

  7. I love the first two photos. I learned to ride a bike in the country, and our long farm driveway was the perfect place to learn safely -- away from traffic I later encountered in the suburbs. The dog in the basket is priceless :-)

  8. That is a very very long straight country road, at least you wouldn't get lost although I expect it is a long way from one place to another so a bike would make life easier.

  9. Love the artful photo of your daughter on the empty road. The cute dog on the bicycle is a rare shot. Is the Podenco related to the whippet?

  11. That last photo is so cute, but the artificial aging process is so fun!

  12. I saw a lady a few times some years ago who was often to be seen with her little dachshund sitting in a basket on the BACK of her bike! Once she had a french stick loaf there too. I hoped the dog didn't lick it....
